AOTW
The Animal of the Week is...
Three-Toed Amphiuma
Distribution: They range from western Alabama to eastern Texas and north through the Mississippi Valley to the southeastern portion of Missouri
Habitat: lakes, marshes, sluggish streams etc.
Food: earthworms, fish, crayfish, molluscs, insects, snakes, tadpoles, frogs and other amphiumas
Size, Body length: Over a metre long!
Breeding: Breeding occurs underwater in winter/spring. The female amphiuma usually lays up to 200 eggs.
Status: Around common-vulnerable.

AOTW
The Animal of the Week is...
Hoopoe
Upupa epops
Distribution: Europe-South Africa. Mainly seen in south England
Habitat: South coast (when on migration)
Food: Insects and Spiders
Size, Body length:
The size of a blackbird, around 41 cm?
Breeding: The Hoopoe breeds only occansionally. Pairs breed once annauly
Status: A common migrant.
Question:
Can you describe a hoopoe's call?
Notes:
-The bird quiz has finished. As some know, the prize is quite large. There will be more quizes, maybe one per week.
-No meetings this week (Tuesday the 17th and Friday the 20th)
-From now on there will be a question with every AOTW. The first to answer it correctly and specifically will get a lolly (non--members may answer the question and get a prize too!).

Bird Quiz Answers! YAY!!!
Thanks to everyone who gave the Bird quiz a go. These are the answers...
(Note: Some questions have multiple answers).
1# Are Blackbirds black?
Most Blackbirds are black. Chicks may have fluffy grey or brown down, while females always stay brown. Blackbirds also are animals which can be albino (white)
2#How many species of penguin are there?
There are 17 official breeds.
3# What extinct bird was nicknamed, "The Demon Duck"?
Bullockornis or Genyornis. Most of their relatives have been nicknamed, "Demon Ducks"
4# What extinct animals were birds (mainly chickens) related to?
Dinosaurs, mainly big ones like the T-rex
5# What is the Spanish name for penguins?
Pinguino or Penguino. There is no definate answer.
6# What is the Latin name for penguins?
Pinguis or the scientific name, Aptenodytes Forsteri
7# What type of bird is a Hobby?
A small Falcon/ Bird of Prey
8# What is the name of Britain's smallest owl?
The Little Owl (quite obvious, don't you think?)
9# Are Feral Pigeons Endangered rare etc.?
They very common
10# What is a Wren's full scientific name?
Troglodytes troglodytes

Animal of the Week
The Animal of the Week is...
Grey Seal:
Distribution: North Atlantic Ocean
Habitat: Exposed rocky shores
Food: Fish, Cephalopods and Crustaceans
Size, Body length:
Male: 210cm, Female: 180cm,
Size, Weight: Males: 230kg, Females: 155kg.
Breeding: The gestation period is 11.5 months. The pup weighs about 15 kg at birth and is born with a white coat. Pups gain about 2 kg of weight a day due to the high fat content of their mother's milk . After three weeks of suckling the pup, the female mates again and then leaves the breeding area (rookery).
Status: Lower Risk - Endangered

Animal of the Week-Mara
The Animal of the Week is...
Mara - Rodent
Distribution: Central and South Argentina
Habitat: Open Scub and Grassland
Food: Short grasses and Herbs
Size: 50-75cm long with a 4.5cm tail and weighing 8-9kg
Breeding: Females give birth to 1-3 young after a gestation of 90 days. Within a day the pups start grazing and wandering from the burrow, but they stay near it for up to 4 months, with the mother returning to nurse them once or twice a day.
Status: Lower Risk - Near Threatened
